“Practical business goals are very important as well as a practical vision. It’s the equivalent to somebody that wants to build a house. He or she has their own piece of ground and decides to build their dream house, goes to the builder and says: “please build me a house” – the builder is going to ask him/her for a plan to build the house.

Exactly. As I said in the first session, the thing that’s really missing in entrepreneurship is the Architect. The person that really sits down and draws up a practical vision or blueprint of how this “house” will be built. So that, in a nutshell, is why a vision and practical business goals are so important.”

“Keep it simple and keep it practical.  A vision is something that is very misunderstood. People think it’s some kind of pie in the sky idea or a dream. The meaning of vision gets lost in translation with all these definitions. Basically, a vision consists of a business purpose, a business strategy, a tactical approach, and practical business goals. That is a vision. Firstly, a purpose. Why you’re doing what you’re doing? Secondly, you’ve got to have a strategy. How do I role out this idea I want to work towards? And lastly a tactical approach. The step-by-step process to practically roll out your business.”

“The Business Model Canvas is a great tool to get started. It’s very practical and simple to understand what the business model canvas is all about.

Take a piece of paper and a pen and draw yourself a pyramid, and then at the top, you have your business purpose: why am I doing this?

Then in the middle layer, you get your business strategy. Now that’s what I mentioned in the first two sessions. Your focus point, your unique selling proposition, and your competitive advantage.

And then the last layer of this pyramid is your tactical approach, which will become your practical business goals: Step 1, step 2, step 3, step 4, step 5, or alternatively you can come to Company Partners for a Professional Business Plan that basically has the same outline.”

In Summary

In order for you to set business goals, you have to start with the vision and planning process. In doing so, you will be able to establish a business plan and business model canvas, which serves as a roadmap for your start-up. In our next Session (Step #4), we will cover more aspects on: How to Build a Sales Strategy Plan for Your Business, as well as the core elements of a good Sales Cycle. See you there!
