What is Personal Income Tax?

Personal Income Tax is paid on your taxable income. SARS requires all individuals in South Africa to pay Income tax and be tax registered.

Subject to a number of exceptions and refunds, individuals who earn taxable income (such as a salary, commission, fees, etc.) are typically required to pay income tax.

Taxpayers who do not submit their tax returns will be charged an admin penalty which must be paid over to SARS. An Administrative Penalty (Admin Penalty) is a penalty levied under Section 210 of the Tax Administration Act (TAA). The Act prescribes the various types of non-compliance which are subject to fixed administrative penalties.
