FAQ's & Info on Police Clearance Certificates in South Africa

A Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) is an official document issued by the South African Police Service (SAPS) confirming whether an individual has a criminal record. This certificate is often required for purposes such as immigration, employment, or furthering studies abroad. It is processed through the Criminal Record and Crime Scene Management (CRC) in Pretoria, ensuring accuracy and authenticity.

A PCC serves as proof of your criminal status (or lack thereof) and is a critical requirement for:

  • Immigration or visa applications.
  • Employment opportunities, both locally and internationally (especially If you work in a position of trust)
  • Applications to study abroad.

Having a PCC demonstrates compliance and builds trust with authorities or employers, making it an essential document for various official processes.

To apply for a PCC, follow these steps:

  1. Fingerprinting: Have your fingerprints taken on the SAPS 91(a) form. This can be done at any SAPS station in South Africa or a recognised police station abroad.
  2. Documentation: Provide a certified copy of your ID or passport, a completed application form, and proof of payment for the processing fee.
  3. Submission: Submit your application at the local SAPS station, or if you’re abroad, send it directly to the CRC in Pretoria. You can also use a trusted third-party service like Company Partners to streamline the process and avoid delays.
  4. Follow-up: Track the progress of your application online using the SAPS website.

Due to the delays experienced at the SAPS offices we recommend to work with a private company who can streamline the process.

The validity of a PCC depends on the requirements of the country or institution you are submitting it to. In many cases, it is valid for 3 to 6 months from the issue date. Always confirm the specific validity period with the relevant authority to avoid complications.

Also note a PCC doesn’t itself contain an expiration date and just a date stamp.

If you have a criminal record, the PCC will include this information. While having a record doesn’t make the certificate invalid, it may influence decisions by the authority requesting the document. You can also inquire about expungement options to clear eligible convictions from your record.

Notwithstanding, if you are deemed “wanted” by the SAPS you will not be issued a Police Clearance Certificate.

Yes, the PCC process can be expedited by using specialised services like Company Partners. Our team works directly with SAPS to ensure your application is processed swiftly and efficiently, often delivering results within 5 to 10 working days. This is ideal for those with urgent deadlines or international applications.

The standard application fee for a PCC through the SAPS is R180. This fee is non-refundable and can be paid electronically or at your nearest police station.

Additional costs may apply for courier services or expedited processing. At Company Partners, we offer transparent pricing with no hidden fees, ensuring your experience is straightforward and hassle-free. Our fee is R3490 and takes 10 working days.
